The Seventh Day Sabbath has oftentimes been debated as to whether it is still to be remembered and to what extent. I hope and pray to God that these words are of a simple and clear nature. But above all, I pray I speak in truth, let only truth prevail.

In the beginning God created all wonderful creatures, from the fishes in the depths of the sea to the countless insects that roam the globe and the birds that colour the skies. During the period of Creation God also spoke and blessed two other creations, the creation of the seventh day Sabbath and the creation of the union of a man and a woman (Genesis 2).

Both were scrutinized and analyzed in Moses’ laws, specifying how to go about each one and what is not acceptable by God. But the changes were not always the complete will of God as Jesus explains in the following verses.

According to the Law of Moses, divorce was acceptable,

When a man hath taken a wife, and married her, and it come to pass that she find no favour in his eyes, because he hath found some uncleanness in her: then let him write her a bill of divorcement, and give it in her hand, and send her out of his house. And when she is departed out of his house, she may go and be another man's wife. Deuteronomy 24:1-2

But Jesus spoke differently heeding to God’s desire:

It hath been said, Whosoever shall put away his wife, let him give her a writing of divorcement: But I say unto you, That whosoever shall put away his wife, saving for the cause of fornication, causeth her to commit adultery: and whosoever shall marry her that is divorced committeth adultery.                                                                                Matthew 5:31-32

The Pharisees also came unto him, tempting him, and saying unto him, Is it lawful for a man to put away his wife for every cause? And he answered and said unto them, Have ye not read, that he which made them at the beginning made them male and female, And said, For this cause shall a man leave father and mother, and shall cleave to his wife: and they twain shall be one flesh? Wherefore they are no more twain, but one flesh. What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder. They say unto him, Why did Moses then command to give a writing of divorcement, and to put her away? He saith unto them, Moses because of the hardness of your hearts suffered you to put away your wives: but from the beginning it was not so.                                                                             Matthew 19:3-8

Jesus was not taking away anything from God’s Words but rather establishing the true way God wants His people to live unto Him. The same goes for the Sabbath, which was establish before the Laws of Moses at the beginning during Creation.

And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it: because that in it he had rested from all his work which God created and made.                                                                Genesis 2:3

And proof that is was to be observed before the law was written on the tables of stone here is an observance before the laws were introduced in Exodus 20 showing God does desire obedience from us in accordance with the Sabbath Day.

And the LORD said unto Moses, How long refuse ye to keep my commandments and my laws? See, for that the LORD hath given you the Sabbath, therefore he giveth you on the sixth day the bread of two days; abide ye every man in his place, let no man go out of his place on the seventh day. So the people rested on the seventh day.

(Exodus 16:28-30)

Jesus never taught us things about offerings and sacrifices and traditions that no longer mattered but he did take the time to offer us how to worship the Sabbath given from God.

And he saith unto them, Is it lawful to do good on the Sabbath days, or to do evil? to save life, or to kill? But they held their peace.                                                                       Mark 3:4

Jesus also was made Lord of the Sabbath (Mark 2:28), why be made Lord of something that will no longer exist and is not significant? No the Sabbath is blessed by God from the beginning on the seventh day of creation. Can man take away what God has blessed?

God is not a man, that he should lie; neither the son of man, that he should repent: hath he said, and shall he not do it? or hath he spoken, and shall he not make it good? Behold, I have received commandment to bless: and he hath blessed; and I cannot reverse it.  Numbers 23:19-20

Can man make a marriage void that is sanctified by God? No, for in the eyes of God the two are still one even with a paper of divorce. Than why is man taking away a day God gave as a gift to us, a day of rest, which God blessed and therefore can not be ignored.

What is misunderstood is the meaning of not being under the law but the freedom granted to us by Jesus. Not being under the Law is not cancelling out what the Law says. Rather it frees us from the actions required to serve the Law that made know our sin (i.e. animal sacrifices, offerings and traditions).  Being freed from that bondage we are able to serve righteousness and seek goodness without being trapped in the cycle of sin offerings which leads to nothing but repetitious acts.

For example, if we look at the Sabbath Day Jesus removed the unreasonable restrictions that prohibited basic living on the Sabbath Day. These include the following:

·      Cannot make a fire (Ex. 35:3

·      Cannot gather sticks (Numbers 15:32)

·      Can only walk a certain distance (Acts 1:12)

·      Cannot pluck ears of corn (Matt 12:1)

·      Cannot carry the bed (John 5:10)

·      Cannot heal etc…

The Sabbath was not destroyed but rather purified to its original purpose. So that we can worship God on that day as God intended, out of love and not fear.

The Ten Commandments exist today as a reminder to sinners…. Think about all the laws in them, we agree to them all do we not?

Therefore consider when the word says we are not under the law. It does not mean the law is destroyed but that we can live in freedom to serve God in all goodness in righteousness. As Paul states “Do we then make void the law through faith? God forbid: yea, we establish the law” (Romans 3:31). Therefore, Jesus teaches to do well on the Sabbath out of our hearts. Not needing to be reminded of what not to do because our hearts have been cleansed from evil and living spiritually we would not go to the pleasures of the flesh… if we do stray the law will bring our sin into our conscience, but not to be in bondage to the sin but to repent and turn back to goodness.  Therefore, let God’s Word stand true:

If thou turn away thy foot from the Sabbath, from doing thy pleasure on my holy day; and call the Sabbath a delight, the holy of the LORD, honourable; and shalt honour him, not doing thine own ways, nor finding thine own pleasure, nor speaking thine own words: Then shalt thou delight thyself in the LORD; and I will cause thee to ride upon the high places of the earth, and feed thee with the heritage of Jacob thy father: for the mouth of the LORD hath spoken it.                                                                                               Isaiah 58:13-14

Blessed is the man that doeth this, and the son of man that layeth hold on it; that keepeth the Sabbath from polluting it, and keepeth his hand from doing any evil       Isaiah 56:2-6

Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work: But the seventh day is the Sabbath of the LORD thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates: For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the Sabbath day, and hallowed it.                                                                                                                                   Exodus 20:8-11

And now as we have been given freedom through Jesus the Christ, search out these words and see for yourself if these words I say are not my own but of truth… God’s will from Creation.
